Here is an email I received today at 12:37 p.m. PST from Anne Staffieri, RUSD Superintendent.
On Thursday February 23, a Ramona High School student reported to school administration that he had overheard individuals stating that they were planning gun-related violence for Friday on the Ramona High School campus.
As soon as the student reported this information, the school contacted the Sheriff’s department. Working jointly with law enforcement, the school district conducted an extensive investigation which lasted throughout the day. As of today, Friday, February 24, we have received admission from the student that it was all a fabrication. The student is being disciplined by school administrators at this time.
Superintendent Dr. Anne Staffieri stated, “It is unfortunate that this student fabrication has caused such an unnecessary disruption to the educational environment of Ramona High School. We handle anything like this with the utmost seriousness. We are invested in our community and the safety of our schools and our children are the top priority.“
Well, since this is the talk of the town; I may as well chime in on it. We gotta talk about the supposed “Impending School Shooting” that’s supposed to happen on February 24th 2017.
This is literally everywhere now. Its in all the Ramona Facebook forums, apparently on Instagram; and even made the local news. Is there really a threat? Was there even a threat made? Regardless of the fact, it is always better to be safe than sorry; especially when it comes to our children. The thought of something like this happening to MY children is horrible and heartbreaking. Unfortunately in today’s day & age; these are the things we are forced to deal with.
Here’s MY take on the whole thing and you can do what you want to with it. Yesterday, I received an email and a call letting me know that Ramona High School and Olive Pierce Middle School were going to have a “lock down drill”. Great! I think it is extremely important to do so for the protection of our children and staff; and to make sure that everybody is prepared in case something horrible like this happens. Now since that happened; all the sudden there are reports that there is an impending school shooting going to happen the next day. Does that not sound weird to anybody? Could it be that since the lock down drill; all the sudden there is a rumor going around that its going to happen? Could this simply be some kids “thinking” its going to happen because of the drill? We all know how kids (and even adults are) about starting rumors. And we all know that one person can say something so little; and the rumor gets blown out of proportion. Happens all the time. I personally think that’s exactly what happened here.
Regardless of what I think was a simple statement getting blown out of proportion and turning into a full fledged rumor about a school shooting happening the next day, the way the school handled it was pretty poor; and I know for a fact many of you agree.
After the rumor mill got started and it was already in the news and being passed around; it wasn’t until about 8 p.m. that we all received one of those fantastic automated phone calls from the district about it. In fact, looking at my email right this second; I received an email about it at 8:02 p.m. Here’s the email…
Dear Ramona High School Families:
I am contacting you to share some information that you might have heard regarding a rumor of an alleged shooting that will take place at Ramona High School on Friday, February 24, 2017. We are aware of this situation and please be reassured that our security as well as our administrative team have followed our protocols in assessing these types of situations.
Based on the information we have gathered, I am confident in stating that these rumors are just that — unsubstantiated rumors, and we have every reason to believe that our campus is safe for all of us. As parents, I trust that you will make the appropriate decision for your family on whether to send your child to school or not. My responsibility, as principal, is to share with you that our school will operate as usual, and that the safety of our students shall remain our utmost priority, tomorrow – and every day they are with us.
Thank you for your time and for your continued support of RHS.
Thanks for that Rowena, the whole community already knew about 3 hours before you sent this out. We appreciate you being on the ball with this one and not messing around. Please sense my form of sarcasm.
Honestly, I often wonder what is going on over at the school district. There’s way too much happening with a ton of stuff and I hear it from other people who want me to talk about it on the show and radio. If you only knew the stuff that comes across to me. Is it not the biggest bunch of bullshit that you have to find out about this stuff on Facebook or the news HOURS before the school district FINALLY lets you know? Seriously.
This morning I received a text form somebody that drove by on their way to work. This person said there are already a few news vans out there covering the story. So be prepared for your children to be even more concerned.
Are you sending our kids to school today? I am. Like I said; I bet it was just a statement from somebody that got blown out of proportion and turned into a full fledged rumor. Besides, with this rumor; the police presence at the school is going to be crazy. If there was ever a time your kids are going to be safe at school; its going to be today.
Regardless of the fact of what “I” think, it IS always better to be safe than sorry. Especially when it comes to our children. To the RUSD, pull your heads outta your asses and get on the ball with stuff; especially stuff like this.
